TWELVE YEARS OF UNWANTED OPINION

Pus – Pus (2011)

Pus – Pus (2011)

Here’s an EP I’ve been meaning to check out for a long time now, but me being me, it’s taken me the best part of forever to finally stumble upon a copy. Maaaan this shit is so fucking heavy – so heavy that on my car stereo all I can hear whilst driving are the cymbals and vocals. This is something that generally happens with muddily produced grindcore records, but Pus’ epic low end just isn’t audible on tarmac. At home, however, things are different. On my stereo, Pus can be appreciated to the max. The guitars are lower than Atlantis! They are the next thing after Hymns…era Last Days of Humanity due to rattle my neighbours out of bed sometime soon. I look forward to it. The EP starts on a great note but for me I find it gets better and better as it goes on. The band’s rather unique mega-doomy / sludge crossover sound really makes this CD, and allows for some very interesting songwriting to unfold. The vocals are agonized shouts and screams and for the most part are drenched in echo or distortion, which really adds to the vibe here. All in all, a cracking debut from Pus – this is some ugly shit! Blows my mind that some of these guys are / were from my home town and it’s taken me this long to hear this stuff. I can’t wait to see what this band come up with next. Released as a collaboration between Universal Tongue and Feretro Records.

Total Fucking Destruction – Childhater (Flexi) (2012)

Total Fucking Destruction – Childhater (Flexi) (2012)

All these years I’ve been collecting records and I’ve never come across a flexi and all of a sudden I have three of them in a month. When it rains, it pours, eh? I don’t really know of that much stuff on flexi that I want; there’s a Swans “New Mind” promo flexi which I hope to end up owning and a live Enemy Soil flexi, but other than that, there isn’t much else. It seems to me that the format is making a comeback these days. I was surfing and decided to check out how the great people at Pirates Press are doing these days, and their website now has a whole new section on flexi manufacturing. To be fair, the prices aren’t too bad considering the quality of sound you can pack into these things. I think that if you could do two-sided flexis we’d have a new flurry of split EPs on flexi format. What do you think? My first gripe with this flexi is that the hole is too tight (that’s what she said) and the record stays still whilst the platter spins. I have to stick a pen in there and wiggle it about a bit to widen it, which wasn’t a massive pain in the arse but these things are so delicate I was afraid I’d damage the fecking thing in the process. Fortunately, this worked a charm and I was able to spin TFD in all their scatterfucking glory. I really miss TFD. Not that they’ve got anywhere, I just don’t listen to them enough. The songs here are the borderline-insanity grindcore that we all know and love, and whilst I don’t think it really expands upon the TFD sound in any way I do honestly believe if something isn’t broken then there is no need to fix it. I could listen to a hundred of these EPs. Massive thanks to the sadly finishing To Live a Lie Records for pressing this on red, limited to 500 copies.

Alec Empire – Intelligence And Sacrifice (2002)

Alec Empire – Intelligence And Sacrifice (2002)

Another nostalgic blast from the past for me! Thanks to Zoverstocks selling on Amazon for 3p a record, I managed to get my hands on another album that I’ve put off buying for years. Before the industrial brigade get all up in my grill about how my info on Mr. Empire is all wrong, I must tell you I write this all as an outsider to Alec Empire’s / Atari Teenage Riot’s long career(s). This is another one of those albums that treads into the dangerous territory of mixing hardcore dance music with metal. As we all know, that either goes really well (The Berzerker) or really, really badly (Tourette Syndrom – sorry guys! Ha ha). Alec Empire tends here to stick to more digestible song structures that the two previously mentioned examples, so the chance of him going wrong is a lot lower. However, this record is definitely not for everyone. I’m not even sure if it is for me. I tend to come back to it every so often with a grin and a thought along the lines of “this is genius ” but just as often put it back on the shelf thinking “Jesus, my head hurts, make it stop!”. There are some cracking stand-out tracks here, however. “Everything Starts with a Fuck” (both parts) is the best example of what this record is all about, and is, in a word: stonking. Lead single “Addicted to You” is simply just that; addictive, if you’d excuse the awful choice of words. And, for those of you with a disdain for the regular song structures, the album comes with a huge bonus disc of extra material filled to the brim with all sorts of weird shit; some of it bordering on harsh noise, some of it dancey, and some of it is just half-hour long ambient soundscapes. A bit of everything, then. In fact, the whole package is a bit much and a touch overwhelming. Out on DHR, which is Empire’s own label.

Pig Destroyer / Isis – Split 7″ (2000)

Pig Destroyer / Isis – Split 7″ (2000)

This is one my favourite splits ever! Limited to 2000 copies thanks to Relapse Records. There is the usual Relapse 100 clear, 100 on orange, a bizarre 50 on white, and the remaining 1750 on black. I was lucky to get a black copy at a fairly decent price, but be wary that the white and orange pressings can fetch hefty price tags on record collector websites. Classic Pig Destroyer are on top form, covering the goregrind legend that is (or was) Carcass. There is simply not a better version of “Genital Grinder / Regurgitation of Giblets” in existence. “Exhume to Consume” leaves a bit to be desired vocal-wise, but for the most part is an ultra-tight, lightening-fast zip through a classic track from the genre. Isis on the other hand, opt for something a lot more slow and dirgy. With Agoraphobic Nosebleed’s Jay Randall in tow they sucessfully create their own very unique version of the legendary Godflesh song “Streetcleaner”. Not as sprawling in production as the original, but is almost suffocating with claustrophobia.

The Chemical Brothers – Do It Again (2007)

The Chemical Brothers – Do It Again (2007)

Probably not my favourite Chemical Brothers tune but a good one all the while. I got this for I think £1 in Virgin Megastore when that was still around. This was released on every format possible for a single, barring tape. The 12″ contains an extended mix and a different B-side, and the CD version contains an edited mix and a remix. It seems the only place to get the un-altered single (other than to buy the supporting album) is here on this white 7″. Lucky me.

Paul Phipps – The Very Best of Paul Phipps (6″, Lathe, Square) (2013)

Paul Phipps – The Very Best of Paul Phipps (6″, Lathe, Square) (2013)

Don’t let the heart-melting picture of Mr. Phipps’ dog Levi on the centre-label give you the wrong idea; this record is an absolute nightmare! Paul Phipps – the guy behind Rectal Twat, Cocksnot., Wolf Pussy and many other projects that are hard on the ears – presents a small cross-section of “songs” that he considers his personal best. That sits well with me! Prepare your lugholes for 2 sides of absolute noisecore annihilation! This even contains the song “Sean Jenkins is a Bitch” from the Fart Wank / Rectal Twat split tape. I am famous!! This was cut by Graham Baldwin (the same guy who did these) and is strictly limited to 5 copies, so I’m pretty lucky to be owning one, in all fairness. Check out 2208 Records for more cutting info and samples of all the work he’s done so far!  (2021 edit: 2208 is no more. Also, fuck Photobucket for ruining the picture art for this one.)

Stalaggh – Projekt Misanthropia (EP) (2006)

Stalaggh – Projekt Misanthropia (EP) (2006)

Is there anything quite so harrowing as the story behind Stalaggh? Probably, but still, their tale is one of the sheer lengths (or is that depths) that people will go to in the name of art. Basically, the short version is that Stalaggh was formed by some of the leading names in the European black metal scene (who come together anonymously) to make the most nihilistic and horrible noise terror ever heard. As vocalists, Stalaggh controversially garnered assistance from two (also anonymous) mentally ill patients, one of which famously killed himself after the release of the first Stalaggh EP in 2003. The other apparently had attacked and killed his mother at the age of 16. How these people were allowed out into a recording studio, I am not really sure. This 7″ is a promo tool for the third Stalaggh EP/record, Projekt Misanthropia, and it contains about 5 minutes of audio from those sessions. For most people, believe me, this is more than enough. Depending on your world view and tolerance towards extremely upsetting material, playing this record could be the longest five minutes of your life. Luckily for me then, I am jaded enough to see past the potential moral-nightmare that surrounds this band. Saying that, this is some of the more unsettling noise I have ever had the displeasure of hearing. The full release of this (on CD) came with an empty box of Risperdal tablets. Grim. As. Fuck.

Swans – We Rose From Your Bed With The Sun In Our Head (2012)

Swans – We Rose From Your Bed With The Sun In Our Head (2012)

Whilst I wasn’t quick enough to snag one of the original hand-made run of 1000, and whilst I am not rich enough to pay some prick hipster cunt with a wardrobe full of berets £90 for a second hand copy which no doubt they have never even played, I was finally able to get my hands on this live album when Mr. Gira thankfully re-pressed an unlimited, non-special edition run on CD. Phew. Unfortunately, this does not contain the excellent acoustic demos that the original hand-made version has, but that is a small sacrifice to pay. I don’t think I’ve ever been as excited about a live album before in my life. As a general rule, live albums suck ass (2020 edit: no, they don’t), but at as far as Swans is concerned, I think they break enough general rules in music anyway so why not snap the live album rule too? They seem to put a live album out for every single era of their existence and they’ve only done one fairly shit one so far (Anonymous Bodies… anyone?), so that’s not too bad going! Before The Seer came out, I needed something to compare with the utterly exhausting and all-encompassing experience that is Swans live, but My Father… just didn’t cut the mustard. I love the record, but it is lacking in the certain intensity that Swans hold as a live group. We Rose From Your Bed… kindly provided me with that Swans-feel right in my own home, until The Seer came along and gave me a brain hemorrhage due to it’s severe awesomeness. When Swans play live, the songs become drawn out, almost improvised versions of themselves. The fact that the incredibly simple “No Words / No Thoughts” is dragged out for over 20 minutes here should be worrying, and to be fair when I saw them at Roadburn I was a bit confused as to what was actually going on, but every single time the intro riff is repeated over and over and over, instead of getting more annoying, it gets more anxious; it keeps building and building until it eventually explodes. This is the general rule here – the seeking of total sonic annihilation! You can’t fault Gira and Co. for not living up to that! Just looking at this record makes me excited for the up and coming UK tour in April. A recent Facebook status by Gira informs us that in recent gigs, the song “The Seer” has mutated into something that is now one hour and a half in length! Jesus fucking Christ! I have recently been “diagnosed” with tinnitus and need to source out proper hearing protection before heading to more shows, but I just cannot imagine listening to Swans with earplugs in! It would be sacrilege! Anyway, this record is out on an unlimited run on Young God, and signed by Michael Gira.

Redlight District Part I: The Black Edition – Torture Border / Kaelteeinbruch – Split CDr (2012)

Redlight District Part I: The Black Edition – Torture Border / Kaelteeinbruch – Split CDr (2012)

This is the first CDr in the ongoing noise collection called “Redlight District” on Germany’s Shit Noise Records. This is the only one so far I have seen that does not have a colour assigned to it (well, it’s called the “black” edition, but still, black technically isn’t a colour, and if the images were tainted black, surely they wouldn’t be visible?). Limited to 50 hand numbered copies on CDr. Torture Border open things up with a rumbling, bassy hum that eventually gives way to what sounds like distorted suffering. Screams, yelps, pleads and whining come forth in glorious stereo, all overlapping and mangled underneath the humming, droning noise. Kaelteeinbruch, who appears as the second band on every single volume of the Redlight series, cuts in with a much harsher sound, which initially has me turning my car stereo down. Holy fuck I nearly crashed listening to this!

Dehydrated Tissues / Latexxx Command / Menstrual Fistfuck – Split CDr (2013)

Dehydrated Tissues / Latexxx Command / Menstrual Fistfuck – Split CDr (2013)

When I got this through the door the other day it took me right back to the thick of the good ol’ trading days! Gotta love these insane underground goregrind compilations and splits, there really is nothing like them anywhere else in the music world. As with most Dehydrated Tissues releases, this has been put out on the band’s own label Regurgitated Stoma Stew Productions, who deal in a plethora of absolutely fucking filthy goregrind, porngrind and noisecore. Well worth a look in! Dehydrated Tissues take their Rompeprop-worship to a whole new level here, even mimicking Romperop’s hilarious intro tracks with the song “IntroIntroLOL”. Tracks like “Colon Pogo” and “I Am The Vaginal Cheese Inspector!!!” absolutely reek of Dutch polka goodness, and this can only be a good thing – there really is nothing quite like shaking your tail feather to some groovy-porno-gore-grind! It is the only music I can legitimately dance to (I’m not joking – you should have seen me at a Venetian Snares gig. Can anyone say “square”?). Latexxx Command are just as great, but bring more of that dirty South American porno vibe, rather than wading through gore. Sure, it sounds virtually the same as Dehydrated Tissues give or take some production values, guitar tone and degree of phaser effect on the pitch-shifter, but for me the definition between porngrind and goregrind is entirely the vibe you get from the music. It is easy to go ahead and categorise bands into each genre, but so many successfully cross over so seamlessly that to an outsider it could look like there is no difference at all. Menstrual Fistfuck is a project by the same mind behind Latexxx Command and for this reason I think it sounds very similar to the latter, although it does shake it up a bit here and there.

Last Days Of Humanity – Hymns Of Indigestible Suppuration (2000)

Last Days Of Humanity – Hymns Of Indigestible Suppuration (2000)

Welcome to quite possibly the most perfect goregrind sound. Last Days of Humanity are probably better known for their later, 9000bpm efforts, but Hymns of Indigestible Suppuration is more my bag of disfigured body parts. The whole thing starts off with a frankly odd sample, before kicking into some of the best down-tuned slop I’ve ever had the displeasure of hearing. Could that artwork be summed up in a more perfect sound? I doubt it. The guitars are a thick wall of mushy goodness; the bass and 6-stringer mingling together are seemingly inseparable  On top of that under-layer of filth are the drums; crisp, clear and clean – the ultimate opposite to the muddy thickness of the string section. The snare is one of the best sounds ever put to tape. It is bouncy, bright and brilliantly mixed in with the terminal goo oozing from the amps. The vocals…well, I don’t really know what to say here! Jesus!  There are still copies of this in circulation for a fairly acceptable price, although I am not sure if it is out of print or not. Out on Bones Brigade Records.

Tumour – Spinal-Castrated Humanoid (2006)

Tumour – Spinal-Castrated Humanoid (2006)

I’ll quickly start this post by asking if anyone reading has any idea what’s become of Tumour these days? Is the project still going? Any news at all? Drop me a comment below if you know. Thanks!!! This was the first Tumour record I heard, and I got it through a trade with the label in (I think) 2007, so it was a while ago now. I’m not sure if I fell in love with the vocals, bass or drums first. All of which are quite frankly awful – the vocals sound like a tuned-up waterfall-generator (you know, one of those relaxation boxes that give out sounds and pretty lights?), the bass sounds like humming machinery and the drums are cheap ‘n’ nasty programmed hits. But it all comes together to form the mother of bedroom goregrind! I’m not sure entirely if Rogore records his Tumour shits in a bedroom or an actual studio, but that is really besides the point here. The sound is what I’m trying to define. The “album” itself isn’t really that long, but is bolstered by a metric fuckton of “bonus traxxx”, all of which are untitled, which seems a bit of a waste, because if you really like one you can’t fuckin’ tell which one it is, unless your watching the track number go up with every blast of grind. Or maybe you can memorize the sample at the beginning of the track! That’s a good trick. Anyway if you like nasty shit this is well worth a blast so give it a go. This was put out in 2006 by the great (and possibly defunct?) indy label Half-Life Records.

Gut / Rompeprop – Split 7″ (2006)

Gut / Rompeprop – Split 7″ (2006)

Gut sounds absolutely huge on vinyl, I just wish they’d stop fucking around and play some more grind! I love the fun element of modern Gut whereas a lot of goregrinders shun them now, but on this record for the most part it’s a template of “typical porn sample followed by uninspired five-to-ten second song with silly vocals”. I am glad that I didn’t shell out the earth for the original CD version of this, and I even commend Everydayhate for putting this on wax. Not to mention, “Nympho is a Gee” is my all time favourite Gut song (either that or “The Taboo Room”). But, unfortunately, the rest of the Gut side is massively disappointing, and often boring. Rompeprop on the other hand simply cannot be faulted. Open up the sleeve and see written “If you think harmonizer / pitchshifter-vocals are fake, so is your distortion on your guitar!”. That couldn’t be more right! Big up the pitchshifted vokills! After the hilarious opener “Hallo!”, Rompeprop gurgle’n’slam through some excellent polka-dance inducing goregrind for us all. ‘Nuff said. Spin this, get up, wiggle back and forth and point those fingers.

Staind – Break The Cycle (2001)

Staind – Break The Cycle (2001)

Since I began listing not only my vinyl but my entire music collection on Lines in Wax, I knew the day would come where I would have to touch upon the questionable purchases I made when I was younger. Today that day has finally come. Scorn at nu-metal all you like, but I actually like this CD. I actually prefer it to say, I dunno, Deathcrush by Mayhem. Well, maybe not prefer. Wrong choices of words. But I find it more listenable. I bought this when I was 11 or 12 years old. The live version of “Outside” was the most played video on Kerrang! TV and that’s probably what made me buy Break The Cycle. Staind were quite lovey-dovey so I remember being pretty surprised at how heavy some of the songs were. What Staind have become or what they did with their career is not what I am discussing here, only what I am experienced with here on this album. A good half of this stadium-filling nu-metal record actually contains pretty good songwriting. Despite the chart success, both “Outside” and “It’s Been A While” are extremely well crafted and catchy songs. Opener “Open Your Eyes” is a fairly grim affair, and “Pressure” is genuinely heavy for something of this nature. Other songs on the record don’t really amount to much, but even the terribly angsty “For You” has one hell of a riff, and the uninspiring “Fade” is actually pretty thoughtful under the boring fuzz. Staind as a group used baritone guitars and five-string basses before it was particularly well-known in mainstream metal, and this definitely contributed to the heavier-than-usual sound here. Sometimes it feels like the music is too heavy for the words. I read that somewhere before in an article about the band Kroh, but I definitely think it applies here better. Hate me for writing about this if you will, but I don’t particularly care. There’s a lot worse to come! Ha Ha!

Dead Infection / Haemorrhage – Split 7″ (2009)

Dead Infection / Haemorrhage – Split 7″ (2009)

Okay. I’m confused with this Dead Infection side here. What the hell is the furniture obsession thing about? The artwork, instead of some putrefying gore, is a table and chairs. The songs, instead of your usual goregrind fodder, are all about furniture. What the hell have these guys been smoking / snorting / injecting? Nevertheless, the music here is top form and Dead Infection blast and chug through some dank grindcore for us all. Have these guys had a line up change? I don’t recognise the vocalist’s name. Fuck knows. I’m very stupid sometimes. Haemorrhage are one of those bands that always escape me. I have a few splits with them on now but I’ve never actively gone seeking them out, and I have yet to hear a full length record by them, which is a bit daft considering they are pretty much awesome as fuck. Here are three more reasons for me to download everything this band has ever done and then slowly purchase all the records over a two year period. That is what normally happens! (inb4 “download is wrong, mmm’kay?”) This record has been out for a few years now and has been eluding me up until this point so I am glad to finally get my hands on it. Out on Fat Ass Records, an excellent label from Poland.
