The Beatles – Rubber Soul (1965)

November 27, 2024

Another Beatles album that sounds like how I expected the Beatles to sound. I am now in more firmer territory (no doubt before we go off the deep end with the experimental shit haha). This one is very well produced indeed, but personally I preferred the Help! soundtrack which came not so long before this one. Whilst I find the production is more “present” and warmer here, the songs on the previous record were just better, IMO. I can see from looking online at RYM that I am in the minority here, but that is what it is!

Oh, and all sorts of weird panning tricks are back, which keeps me on my toes if nowt else. And finally, the closing track? Holy smokes, guys! Easy now, is it? I’ve listened to it all; from the reprehensible depths of national socialist black metal and RAC / Oi!, to the sleaziest, scummiest pornogrind, to the most disgusting, misogynistic brutal death metal. So trust me when I say it: the closing number, “Run For Your Life” is fucking SINISTER, fam. Like, who OK’ed this? I guess it’s in the same vein as classics such as Billy Roberts / Hendrix “Hey Joe” or Tom Jones and friggin’ “Delilah”; a strange trend in pop and rock from “back then” when it was seemingly OK to murder “your” woman if she was stepping out on you. “But hey, she was cheatin’, Mr. Judge, so it’s OK!”. LOL. But yeah, the lyrics for “Run For Your Life” are extra fucking weird (“You better run for your life if you can, little girl!”). Of course Lennon wrote it, the fucking weirdo.

Anyway. 3/5 album lmao
